Safe Zone

The Safe Zone Program was initiated in the winter semester of 2011 in response to sexual orientation hate speech discovered on campus, particularly during fall 2010.  Fort Lewis College aligns with protecting and supporting all of its members, with the equal opportunity policy clearly indicates that the college “does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, political beliefs, or veteran status.”

A coordinating committee made up of Dr. Michael T. Martin, Dr. Keri Brandt, Dr. Barth Cox, Mr. Marc Goldfarb, and Ms. Laura Latimer created a manual and workshops designed for Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender [LGBT] and LGBT-affirmative faculty, staff, administrators, and students who desire education on such matters, to raise awareness within the community, and to provide support and resources for those individuals in need of a safe place to talk and get information regarding any issues they are confronting or discrimination they may have faced.
