Introduction/ Scope and contents

Collection P 011: Durango Herald photonegatives collection
1955-1992 (bulk years 1956-1976)
approximately 21,000 photonegatives (in 12,269 sleeves in 30 negative storage boxes, plus items in 1 records box and 1 document case)

This collection is useful for anyone studying Durango (Colo.) in the mid-20th century.  It consists of thousands of black and white photonegatives (most of them, 4 x 5 safety film -- and a document case full of three years of 35 mm strips of film, 1974-1976) and a relatively small number of contact prints of some negatives, taken from 1950 through 1975 for use in the Durango daily newspaper.  The images are only partially identified.  The Center recently (within the 2004-05 school year) began cataloging them at the item level.  Due to their chronological arrangement, they are most useful to someone who has a reference date.  Identifications are possible by comparing these images with photos that the Herald published during those years.  Those newspaper issues are available at the Center (see http://swcenter.fortlewis.edu/finding_aids/inventory/swnewspapers.htm for details of the Center's newspaper holdings).

Historical note

Administrative information

About the organization of this collection:  The negatives are arranged by type (4x5, 35mm, and contact prints), then within the type they are arranged chronologically.

Acquisition information: The Durango Herald donated these photonegatives to the Center of Southwest Studies on February 20, 1998, soon after the newspaper removed them from its morgue during building renovations at that time (accession 1998:02008).  Apparently, an undescribed quantity of additional photonegatives was discarded prior to that; no further information is available about that.

Processing information Numerous Fort Lewis College Center of Southwest Studies archives student assistants, most recently Nicholaus Sandner in the winter and spring of 2004, Marion Mester during the summer of 2004, professional archival intern Sampson Sage in the fall of 2004, and volunteers at the Center of Southwest Studies (including Ruth Cross, Bud Davis, and Paula Wiseman) devoted many hundreds of hours to move the negatives into sequentially numbered pH-neutral archival storage sleeves while retaining any information that was written on the original acidic brown envelopes that housed the negatives.  Rehousing of 7,000 of the 4x5 negatives was funded by a $1,000 cash gift from the Ballantine Family Fund in November of 2002.  Mr. Sandner tested samples of the negatives using the burn test and the Diphenylamine Test in April of 2004 and determined that these negatives are, fortunately, not cellulose nitrate.  The Center's archival student assistant Emily Kestenbaum began entering envelope-level records into the Center's Images database in the fall of 2004, continuing through the winter of 2005 (negative #s 3570 through 5147, covering the period Jan. 1956 - Dec. 1957, through the end of the Center's photonegatives box 12) are now cataloged at the item level in the Center's database of images).  Student assistant Andrew Hayes continued with that data entry in December of 2005 through April of 2007 (a portion of his work was funded through income generated by the use of the Center's images).  We have created 4,216 basic item descriptive records, for negatives #s 3,570 through 8,120 (some gaps) completed thus far (we are currently working on the metadata for the negatives in Box #20).  This inventory was prepared by J. Todd Ellison, C.A., beginning in July of 2004.

Series description

These photographs are included in three series:

1.    4x5" photonegatives and cut 35mm strip photonegatives, in negative boxes #s 8 through 30, dated 6/2/1955 through 2/27/1978 (not comprehensive in date coverage), arranged chronologically (to a considerable extent) and sequentially numbered #s 3570 through 12,120.  These are part of the Center of Southwest Studies' master files of photonegatives.

2.   Uncut 35mm strip photonegatives, in 1 records box (1974-1976 and 1 folder from 1979) and 1 document case (January - August 1992).  In archival plastic sleeves arranged chronologically in subject-labeled folders.  These are filed with collection P 011, not with the Center of Southwest Studies' master files of photonegatives.

3.   35mm strip photoprint contact prints, in 1 negative box (only partially filled).
