The Marketing & Communications department at Fort Lewis College hopes to empower all staff to use social media in ways that will be beneficial to their department or program. M&C staff are responsible for creating content for the main Fort Lewis College platforms, but also for educating others to create content for their own platforms. In addition, the staff work with faculty members to create social-media-themed projects or guest speak about social media in classes.
FLC defines social media as "media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques." The three crucial components of this definition are:
- "social interaction": This is a two-way conversation, not a broadcasting medium!
- "accessible": High tech software and technology aren't needed to be involved -- anyone with access to the internet can be included in social media.
- "scalable": Information posted on social media can spread quickly! This can be a good or a bad thing.
