New guidebook puts public art on campus on display

The FLC campus is remarkably beautiful as it is, but an impressive inventory of public art installations enhances that natural scenery with intentional works of creative and meaningful art. Artworks range from large paintings on canvas in academic halls, to bronze leaping deer hidden in copses of trees, to large locally sourced boulders that rotate on spindles when pushed.

Visitors to campus can now be sure they see that public art thanks to a new public art walking tour guidebook that lets aficionados better appreciate the more than two dozen pieces on display on campus. The guide includes a detailed map along with photos and a description of each piece, information on the artist, the date of installation, the materials used, and the donor of each piece.

Art Walk GuideThere is also a Google Maps version of the walking tour, below, that lets visitors use their smartphones to navigate and learn about pieces as they wander campus.

The Self-Guided Public Art Tour guidebook is available for free at these locations:

Off-campus:

  • Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Avenue

On-campus:

  • Student Union information desk
  • Art Hall
  • Berndt Hall
  • Admission Office, in Kroeger Hall.
