Our role in shaping our students into future leaders

January 8, 2020

Dear colleagues,

Like you, we’ve been reflecting on Wednesday’s events when rioters attempted to disrupt the Constitutionally mandated peaceful transfer of power through violence and intimation. It was a sad and disappointing day for our country—particularly given President Trump’s role in fostering the foment that led to violence at the U.S. Capitol—and we are deeply troubled by the loss of life that occurred. While the attack on the Capitol exemplified America at its worst, we took solace in watching the Congressional proceedings resume undaunted by the cowardly acts of the afternoon.

As we think about the years ahead and the challenges that face our nation, we are thankful that we find ourselves in leadership roles at Fort Lewis College—an institution dedicated to civility and the free exchange of ideas, the celebration of diversity, and the cultivation of understanding. We are thankful that we can support you, as you engage in the crucial work of shaping our students into the future leaders of our nation. We can think of no more important work than the work you do every day, providing constant reassurance to our students that we are at our best when we come together—to debate ideas, question assumptions, share experiences, and even face a pandemic together, as a community. The manner in which our faculty and staff engage with students to foster mutual understanding is a model for what our nation desperately needs now and into the future.

We are optimistic about Fort Lewis College's ability to play a role in building the kind of society we want to achieve. In the coming months, we will launch the FLC Building Community series that draws upon the expertise of our faculty and staff to foster collaborative debate and discussion on the most important issues of our time.  We look forward to shaping a new initiative that will harness the strengths of our community at a time when our students—and our nation—need it most.

Until then,

Tom, Cheryl, and Steve
