Giving Circle - Women in Science and Leadership

An FLC Giving Circle to Support Women in Science and Leadership

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

– Margaret Mead

The Women in Science and Leadership Giving Circle invites all those who yearn to engage in an ongoing conversation and collective philanthropy to support FLC students and faculty who are developing active female science leaders.

Another major goal is to serve as a learning community, where members gain new insights into the College and related issues at our meetings. At the same time, the diversity of the membership allows us to provide valuable feedback to the College that otherwise might not be received.

Vision

To engage philanthropic leaders in developing our female students as empowered scientists and active leaders here at FLC and beyond.

Funding priorities

Year 1:

Funds will support Associate Professor of Biology Heidi Steltzer's journey to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound project. The project is an international program tasked with strengthening the societal role of women with science backgrounds. With the tagline “Mother Nature needs her daughters,” the organization aims to provide leadership training for a thousand female scientists over the next 10 years to enhance the influence and impact of these women in science and policy.

Year 2 and beyond:

Funds are open to proposals from FLC faculty, with an emphasis on:

  • Promoting scholarship, research, and service by female faculty, staff, and students in science disciplines.
  • Enriching leadership experiences and training for female students in science disciplines.
  • Encouraging outreach and engagement beyond the classrooms at FLC.

Become a member

The Circle includes tiered membership levels. Membership is tiered in order to encourage as many investors as possible to join. Members need not be physically present at meetings to participate. We have phone-in and Skype-in options available to us as needed. We hope that this will allow participation by interested men, women, alumni, and FLC supporters nationwide as we grow the Circle.

Leadership Level

Requires a gift to the Giving Circle of $1,000 or more (which can be made in installments).

  • Full voting member of the Giving Circle Council, if so desired.
  • Exclusive updates from Heidi from her journey.
  • Approximately two meetings during the year:
    • Invitation to a spring luncheon to hear Heidi’s stories and first-hand accounts (and from other grantees in future years).
    • Invitation to a fall business meeting to review proposals and make 2017 distribution recommendations.
  • Inclusion with all membership privileges in the Rim Trail Society, our leadership giving group.
  • Your name listed on the Giving Circle webpage and all advertisements where names are listed, if so desired.

Member Level: Graduates of the Last Decade

These FLC graduates are entitled to Leadership Level benefits for a gift of $100 multiplied by the number of years since graduation, with the first year after graduation being complimentary. For example, an alumna/alumnus graduating in June 2016 and joining the Giving Circle would receive a complimentary one-year membership. The following year, she/he would pay $100 (because she was out of school for one year). The year after that she/he would pay $200 (because she/he was out of school for two years) and so on up to her 10th year out of school. Please note that this applies to graduates of any age and any degree.

Friendship Level

Requires a gift to the Giving Circle at the $250 or more level, with a two-year commitment to pledge that amount.

  • Full voice in meetings, but not a voting member of the Giving Circle Council.
  • Exclusive updates from Heidi from her journey.
  • Approximately two meetings during the year:
