Visiting elder with studentFor one week, during either the fall or winter semesters, the NAC hosts a well respected elder from different Native American Nations. These elders come from all parts of the country and are chosen for their deep cultural and spiritual knowledge as well as their leadership in academia and Native causes.

During their week at FLC, the Visiting Elder spends the majority of her / his time with the students in one-on-one meetings, speaking in classrooms, and in meetings with other FLC groups, faculty, and staff. This program is designed to foster cultural, academic, social, and spiritual support for our students as well as enrich the campus and local communities.

Past elders have included:

  • Dr. Joe Suina (Cochiti Pueblo)
  • Dr. Henrietta Mann (Cheyenne)
  • Dr. Nancy Lucero (Choctaw)
  • Dr. Lloyd Elm (Onondaga)
  • Dr. Rick Williams (Sioux)
