FLC information for coronavirus (COVID-19)

March 2, 2020

Dear FLC community,

State and campus officials are keeping close track of the potential spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Colorado and I encourage you to do the same. The health and well-being of each member of our Fort Lewis College community is paramount. There may be disruptions to daily campus life as we respond to COVID-19. To that end, we are preparing by monitoring the guidance of federal, state, and local public health experts regarding COVID-19 and will share updates with our community as appropriate.

Take care of yourself and your fellow Skyhawks

To help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

COVID-19 symptoms may be flu-like, ranging from mild to serious, and include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing.

Again, stay home if your symptoms are fever, cough, or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.

If you have these symptoms:

  • Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your symptoms.
  • Do not drop in at the Student Health Center if you have these symptoms. Instead call the Student Health Center at 970-247-7355 for guidance.
  • Avoid contact with others.
  • Do not utilize public transportation while sick.
  • Follow the prevention actions above.

Traveling and returning to FLC

With much of the country traveling in the next few weeks, FLC is asking individuals to be vigilant in monitoring their health. FLC will be monitoring institutional travel and reviewing where faculty, staff, and students are going and returning from.

For personal travel, we highly recommend any international travelers purchase trip insurance, as affected areas are rapidly changing as COVID-19 spreads. It’s also recommended to contact San Juan Basin Public Health to review travel plans. Call San Juan Basin Public Health at 970-247-5702.

Any persons returning to FLC from Warning Level 3 travel areas MUST call the Student Health Center before returning to campus. This allows our health experts to provide critical health information if needed and to protect the health of campus.

If you experience symptoms after any travel, call the Student Health Center prior to returning to campus.

Where to get more information

Contact the Student Health Center at 970-247-7355 with questions or concerns, or contact San Juan Basin Public Health at 970-247-5702 for additional information regarding COVID-19.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has provided the attached fact sheet and this website for updated Colorado-specific information. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention also has COVID-19 information.

I also want to remind our community that it is important to seek facts, not fear regarding COVID-19, and that no member of our campus community should be singled out based upon their personal characteristics.

Best,

Tom
