Important message re: COVID-19 from President Stritikus

March, 11 2020

Dear FLC,

I know the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused uncertainty and concern in our community. Campus leadership has been meeting daily and closely monitoring the developments of the coronavirus outbreak. As we head into spring break, the College has been carefully considering how to protect the health of our campus community and planning how best to respond in coordination with local and state health officials.
As of March 11, the Colorado state health department has confirmed 27 cases of COVID-19. While there are no local cases, now is the time to take concerted action. Alongside our extensive prevention efforts on campus, Fort Lewis College has decided to take the following steps to help reduce the risk of transmission:

  • Classes will convene on campus as scheduled tomorrow and Friday.
  • Classes are canceled Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24 after spring break.
  • Course instruction will be moved online from Wednesday, March 25 through April 6.

We will monitor guidance from public health officials and announce plans for instruction delivery methods on or before April 1, which will apply to the remainder the semester.
This will require everyone’s flexibility and creativity.
Please take your course materials with you over spring break to prepare for online instruction. Make sure to contact IT services if you need access to an internet-capable device for completing online academic work and make sure to check Canvas daily for any course-related communication from your instructors.
Student Housing
Students living on campus are encouraged to leave campus for the break. While campus is not designated as closed, our operations and services will be limited through April 6. Please avoid returning to campus if you have other accommodations.
Faculty & Staff
We realize this decision and communication will raise many questions for faculty and staff. In the coming days leadership will be reaching out via email to address these questions and provide more information.
Teaching & Learning Services has provided resources for moving instruction online, which the Provost will send shortly.
As we shift academics online, we are evaluating the state of operations for campus staff and will communicate updates as soon as possible. At this point, staff are still reporting to campus but practicing social distance. Do not come to campus if you are sick.
All non-essential FLC-sponsored domestic and international travel scheduled before April 6 is canceled. If you feel you have an exception to this restriction, contact your supervisor.
Campus events scheduled through April 6 will be limited or canceled. More information will follow and we will communicate updates as soon as possible.
All future communications will be sent via email, Twitter, Facebook, and the homepage. Information we’ve sent previously regarding COVID-19 and best health practices are available online at and included below.
These are trying times for everyone. Please take care of yourself. Faculty, staff and administration are here for everyone. Call 970-382-6919 or email if you have questions.
