DACA ruling

June 18, 2020

Dear FLC community:

¡Éxito!

In a historic ruling today, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to block the Trump Administration’s attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The ruling provides protection from deportation for more than 700,000 undocumented students, often known as “Dreamers.”  The ruling also allows Dreamers to continue to work and receive an education. While there is now protection for DACA recipients, we still need Congress to act to provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers who contribute in immeasurable ways to our country. I am proud that FLC joined hundreds of institutions throughout our nation to sign on to an amicus brief in support of DACA students.

To the current, future, and past DACA recipients, we say: We stand with you and we always will. We will continue to use our voices to advocate for a Congressional solution. And, today, we celebrate with you.

This ruling, combined with the Monday ruling that protects LGBTQ employees from discrimination, is another step toward justice. While these are progressive and inclusive measures, we acknowledge that there is more work to do and we will continue to advocate for social justice in our society. The journey to achieve equality is long and these two rulings help us move forward.
