Our hearts ache for the Boulder community

The FLC community is anguished with the news of the senseless act of gun violence yesterday in Boulder, Colorado. Our hearts ache for the victims and their families; we mourn with Boulder and the nation over this incomprehensible loss of innocent lives.

The shooting yesterday is a terrible reminder that active shooter incidents are still an ongoing threat, including in Durango and at Fort Lewis College. In fact, the shooting in Boulder yesterday was the seventh mass shooting in seven days in the United States. If you find yourself wondering how you would react during an active shooter, you can find an active shooter training available in Canvas. In that training there is a video outlining what steps you can take to protect yourself. That video is also available on YouTube.

Fort Lewis College has several resources to report people of concern.

  • Tell Someone is a form that can be submitted electronically to FLC officials.
  • You may also utilize Safe2Tell to share your concerns with law enforcement and/or college officials.

Incidents of this nature can often cause anxiety and revive trauma. If you are feeling stressed or anxious because of recent incidents, we encourage you to reach out to our Counseling Center if you are a student or the Employee Assistance Program through Human Resources if you are an employee.

Colorado is too familiar with these senseless acts of gun violence, and in the words of Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, we need to revisit a national conversation about gun violence that does not regress into partisanship. Our hearts ache for our friends in the Boulder community.

Sincerely,
