ADA Rights & responsibilities

As an FLC student with a disability, you have certain rights and responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act that are intended to create and maintain equal opportunities in your pursuit of an education. Here are a few highlights:

Student rights

  • Equal access to courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, information, and facilities offered through Fort Lewis College unless the accommodation required would impose a fundamental alteration of a program or activity, pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others or place undue financial hardship on the institution
  • Reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services, determined on a case-by-case basis
  • Appropriate confidentiality of all information regarding a disability; it’s your choice to whom a disability is disclosed, except as required or permitted by law

Student responsibilities

  • To meet FLC’s qualifications and standards for courses, programs, jobs, services and facilities
  • To reach out to the Accessibility Resource Center in a timely manner when seeking accommodations
  • Engage in the interactive process of determining academic accommodations
  • Provide current documentation of your disability prepared by an appropriate licensed professional, including information about the functional limitations of your disability and how it impacts you educationally
  • Meet with a Accessibility Resources staff member to discuss the nature and impact of your disability
  • Submit a Letter of Accommodation to instructors as early in the semester as possible through the DS student portal
  • Seek information, counsel, and assistance as necessary
  • Request accommodations at the beginning of each Semester

You must initiate the process in order to access services at FLC, and like all students, adhere to the FLC Student Handbook.
