About Dr. McCarthy

Anne grew up in Albuquerque, NM, and has previously studied and worked in San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia, where she worked at Temple University. Her move to Durango and Fort Lewis College in 2008 was a welcomed return to mountains and sunshine. Anne's interests in Dynamical Systems include ergodic theory, dynamics of group actions and partial hyperbolicity. Anne has overseen numerous undergraduate research projects that relate to dynamics. Typically her students work on iterative problems that can be stated easily using geometric structures. This includes work with fractals, billiards, circles and spheres, and visual puzzles.

More recently, Anne and her colleague Pamela Smith (Professor Emeritus of Math) have done extensive work with K-12 math teachers. They are co-founders and directors of the Southwest Colorado Math Teachers' Circle, bring Julia Robinson Math Festivals to FLC, and have run several grant-funded initiatives around trainings and workshops for math teachers. The basic goal of all of these activities is the same: make math feel more creative, open-ended, visual and fun for teachers and learners of math at all levels.

Anne's math circle work also includes working closely with the Navajo Nation Math Circles Project and the Alliance for Indigenous Math Circles. In 2018, Anne authored and became Principle Investigator on the Four Corners Noyce Scholars program. This five-year, NSF-supported grant project brings over a million dollars to FLC, where the majority of that money will go to STEM students interested in pursuing teacher licensure. This project partners with San Juan College, and aims to increase the number of highly-qualified STEM teachers across the Four Corners region.
