Alison Mayes - Guest Conductor/Clinician

 

Alison Mayes

 

Colorado native, Alison Mayes, discovered her passion to instruct, inspire, and encourage young musicians through an intern teaching program that she co-founded with her own high school orchestra director in Grand Junction. She has been teaching in Colorado public schools for ten years, most recently as Orchestra Director at Grandview High School in the Cherry Creek School District from 2010-2016, where the enrollment of string students more than tripled during her tenure. Alison is also an experienced teacher of AP Music Theory, Piano, and Rock and Roll History. She has also taught Orchestra at Broomfield High School (as an interim director) and Peak to Peak Charter School. Alison earned the degree Master of Music Education (Musicology and Music Technology Cognates) from the University of Colorado at Boulder in May 2016. Alison serves as High School Director of the Camp Con Brio, String Camp of the Rockies, held annually in Divide, Colorado. She has also been on the teaching faculty at additional summer camps in New Mexico and Michigan. Alison served as Chair Person for the Colorado High School All State Orchestra from 2013-2015, and has been Strings Ensemble Music Director with the Longmont Youth Symphony since September 2015. Alison received the award of Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2015 from the American String Teachers Association, Colorado Chapter. Under her baton, the Grandview High School String Orchestra performed at the American String Teachers Association National Conference in March 2015; out of hundreds of ensembles that auditioned from across the country. In December 2015, the Grandview Chamber Orchestra had the honor of performing at the Colorado Association of School Boards conference. Aside from teaching and performing, Alison enjoys cooking, baking, shopping, watching movies, listening to Beethoven and Led Zeppelin, going to Colorado Symphony concerts, hanging out with her husband Jason, and playing with their dogs – Cheyenne, Cassie, and Brio
