Choral/Vocal Ensembles

The Concert Choir (MU 105/305)meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:25-2:20. This is the largest choir (approximately 75-100 singers), and there is no audition for this group.  Simply enroll in the course and singers will be placed according to voice type after the school year begins.  Anyone can enroll in Concert Choir, majoring in music is not required.  Approximately 50% of the choir is composed of non-music majors, from freshmen through seniors.  Concert Choir generally performs a wide variety of musical styles, and presents four concerts each year.Concert Choir

The Chamber Choir (MU 106/306) is an intimate (20-30 voices) mixed ensemble, which is selected by audition at the beginning of the school year.  The group performs many different kinds of music, concentrating generally on serious choral works written for chamber ensembles.  The Chamber Choir meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:25 pm.  The audition process requires a prepared solo piece, melodic and rhythmic sight reading, and vocalization. Singers should be able to sing well in tune, have a flexible and expressive singing voice, and have some knowledge of music reading.Chamber Choir

The Fort Lewis College Men’s Choir (MU 300) is a select group of male singers who attend Fort Lewis College.  The Men’s Choir meets as an elective class in the music curriculum.  Music majors, music minors, non-music majors, and occasionally community members are encouraged to audition.

The Men’s Choir was created in 1985 by Dr. Linda Mack Berven.  The group was originally named the “Motets.”  As part of an Early Music History course taught by Dr. Mack, some of the men enrolled in the class prepared a motet for performance (and extra credit).  Their fellow classmates roared with appreciation, and the Men’s Choir was born.  The group has since been growing in size and stature, and now regularly performs for many community and college venues.  The FLC Men’s Choir has continued the American tradition of singing men for nearly twenty-five years.

In addition to their rigorous annual performance schedule, the FLC Men’s Choir travels to area public schools to serve as positive male singing role models.  These performances are done in collaboration with the Music in the Mountains Goes to School program with the intent to recruit and retain male students in public school music classes.Mens Choir

Hawkappella (MU 190/390), Fort Lewis College’s newest choral ensemble, is a highly select a cappella choir comprised of about 16 singers.  The group performs modern popular music often with a beat-box (vocal percussion) and some choreography.  Students interested in auditioning for this ensemble should prepare an unaccompanied vocal solo in the pop, jazz, or musical theatre realm, and be prepared to do some simple sight reading and aural testing.  Singers chosen for this ensemble will be outstanding soloists, but also able to work well in a vocal ensemble setting.Hawkappella

Scenes from the Musical Stage (MU 139/339) meets Wednesdays from 3:35-6:00 every fall semester. Students in the course study and perform fully staged ensemble scenes from the musical theatre, opera, and operetta repertoire. Student performers have opportunities to sing in the community and area schools, as well as on the Fort Lewis College campus. Scenes from the Musical Stage is open to all FLC students by audition.
