About Richard White
A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Richard White holds a Bachelor of Music Composition Degree with emphasis in both classical and jazz composition. This degree includes study in arranging and film scoring, as well as having a working knowledge of all orchestral instruments. His principle instrument studies were in classical and jazz guitar at Berklee, as well as the New England Conservatory of Music. One of the highlights of being a student at Berklee was being able to compose the opening score for a WGBH Boston TV documentary.
After graduating from Berklee in 1978, Richard accepted a position as the Music Director for the Boulder Dinner Theater in Boulder, Colorado. He then moved to Durango, Colorado in 1980 where he began offering private music lessons at Katzin Music & Studios--a position he continues to hold today. It is a career that has proved successful through the years as many of his students have gone on to various successful music careers, and several have become Berklee graduates.
Richard has shared his passion for music and music education with the Fort Lewis Music Department since 1984 when the then Department Chair, Ralph Downey, requested that he coordinate and implement a Guitar Department and serve as an Adjunct Instructor. In addition to his private teaching at Katzin, Richard was responsible for teaching private lessons at Fort Lewis for guitar majors, and all levels of guitar--beginning, intermediate, and advanced—for classes. He served as an Adjunct for several years before leaving to pursue a professional career. His bands, duos, and trios have been honored by being asked to open for headliners such as Al di Meola , and the bands 38 Special, and Kansas.
Today, Richard’s fascination with the complexity and depth of music, in particular the guitar, is “still the joy that lights his soul.” He continues to keep a full student schedule of private students at Katzin Music & Studios and serves as an Adjunct Guitar Instructor for the Fort Lewis College Music Department. He also makes time to play and perform in the Southwest region of the United States.
