Alumnus’ adventuring goes pro

Brandon Mathis is like many Fort Lewis College alumni: he’s an outdoor-oriented adventurer. “I love to ride and ski and climb all year long,” Mathis (Humanities, ’05) says. “It’s not just a summer or winter thing.” Rather than push his passions to the weekends, though, Mathis has developed a career doing the activities he loves during the workweek—and sharing his experiences with the outdoor community.

Fort Lewis College has an average of 1200 Native students each semester. Over 150 different tribes/nations are represented by our students who are traditional and non-traditional, single, single parents, or couples with children.

These students are served in their needs through the Native American Center. The Center is a friendly and inviting place to come and study, socialize, participate in academic support programs, utilize resources, or attend cultural programs and activities.

Student-inspired conference lands students in the business world

Three years ago, Simon Walls’ Marketing Research students conducted a study with the Durango Chamber of Commerce. The results revealed that local professionals desired more education about how to utilize digital marketing to advance their businesses. The research students recommended the idea of hosting a digital marketing conference in the community. Walls, an associate professor of Marketing, made the idea a reality.
