Durango Price Index

This is simplified consumer price index for Durango, the DPI. It is important to note is that the relatively low average income in La Plata County (about two-thirds that of Denver and three-fourths of the State as a whole) and the relatively high housing costs mean that housing dominates the overall cost of living in Durango. We present two versions of the price index. The first version, CPI-1, using average monthly rent as a proxy for "housing equivalents". The second, CPI-2, uses housing equivalent rent.

A key component of the DPI which is from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, has not been published since 2014. We had hoped there was simply a delay in releasing, but it seems to have stopped being calculated. The OBER is currently inquiring into getting updates and, in the meantime, is looking for a substitute. The DPI be updated when it is we can find an alternative. In the meantime, useful price indices can be found for Denver (http://www.bls.gov/regions/mountain-plains/news-release/consumerpriceindex_denver.htm) and the state of Colorado (www.bea.gov, unfortunately this only through 2014).

Note: This is a simplified version of the CPI and should in no way be considered equivalent in its calculation to the CPI calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) or the price of consumer expenditures (PCE) calculated by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). As such, this should not be used to calculate wage or other price changes. Rather, this should only be used to get a sense of overall price movements in the Durango area. Denver and Phoenix CPIs can be found at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov/cpi/)
