Mountain Base Camp

During the summer of 2010 Fort Lewis College entered into a lease agreement with the Colorado Trail Foundation to utilize a cabin on ten acres near Lake City, CO. This new “mountain base camp” (MBC) for the college is managed by the Outdoor Pursuits (OP) program and is to be utilized for educational purposes. Fort Lewis College programs and academic units have access to use the MBC for educational programming whether it is for weekend outdoor education trips, week-long geology camps or department retreats. The MBC is located approximately 20 miles southwest of Lake City just off the famed Alpine Loop. The high peaks of Redcloud, Sunshine and Handies are easily accessible from the MBC.

Amenities for the property include:
  • A cabin with large deck, kitchen, dining area, and sleeping loft (sleeps 9); solar powered lighting system, propane stove, oven, and refrigerator; sink and dishwashing area with running water via Rock Creek (summer only); Katadyn water filtration system; wood stove; and fully stocked cabinets with cooking utensils, pots, pans, and dinner ware.

  • Non-insulated out building (sleeps 3)

  • Gas grill
  • Electric generator
The cost for renting the Mountain Base Camp is $55 per night.
