2017 Peak Experiences Dates: August 20-August 24
The Peak Experiences program is an optional four day, pre-orientation adventure. This backpacking trip into the nearby San Juan Mountains provides an ideal opportunity for new students to get to know one another while traveling in the alpine backcountry near Durango.
Peak Experiences is designed to ease the transition into college life by giving new students the chance to adventure and camp together, forming friendships that continue on campus.
Trip leaders are upperclassman graduates of the Student Outdoor Leadership training program. They'll share both their knowledge of the area and their insights about the culture and community at FLC. They also instruct participants on the basics of wilderness travel and skills as they navigate the San Juans' alpine meadows, forests, lakes, and peaks.
All skill levels and abilities are welcome and no prior experience is required, although participants must be able to hike over rugged terrain, above 10,000 feet, carrying a 40-pound backpack. Backpacks, tents, and sleeping gear are available from Outdoor Pursuits.
