The sign-up date has changed for the 2017 trip and will be in late May/early June. Once the exact date is announced, it will be added here, in addition to an email notification being sent with other Orientation information. A REGISTRATION option will appear on the left side of this page when it opens.
Trips for 2017 will take place the week prior to the on-campus portion of New Student Orientation (August 20-24) and will be focused on backpacking in the mountains surrounding Durango. Students will travel through rugged canyons, camp in aspen groves, and hike across alpine meadows surrounded by 13,000 foot peaks. In groups of 12 (10 students and 2 leaders) will learn the basics of backcountry travel, and how to move and work as a group in the wilderness. These groups will travel, cook, camp and share adventures while taking in the unbelievable landscapes of the southern San Juans.
This area is moderately difficult. Most of the trails are over gradual terrain, but some include off-trail travel, with elevations exceeding 10,000 feet. There are many ridges and peaks that offer outstanding views, but can require hiking challenging, steep sections.
