Career Profile: Tapping the power of words to engage, inform and persuade has been a passion for Mary Ann McCarthy from her early days as a PR and promotional writer for Better Homes & Gardens to a long career in advertising and communications, which continues today.
Mary Ann began her advertising career as a copywriter with Foote Cone & Belding/Chicago. She moved rapidly through the agency hierarchy and soon held creative responsibility for such blue-chip clients as Hallmark cards, Dial soap, Coors beer, Johnson Wax, Kraft Foods and Kimberly Clark. She was proud to serve as the agency's youngest creative director and its youngest VP.
In 1982, she made the transition to healthcare marketing, serving as Senior Vice President and Executive Creative Director at Sieber & McIntyre, then Chicago’s largest healthcare advertising agency. Under her leadership the agency received more than 30 awards for the excellence of its creative product. In 1985, she joined Hamilton, Carver & Lee, a rapidly growing Chicago healthcare agency, as Vice President, Creative Director. Within 18 months, she was named President of The Hybrid Group, the company's consumer/health division.
In 1990, she started her own firm, specializing in marketing-driven copy services for healthcare and B2B companies. She currently serves Chicago-based clients in the health care, publishing and legal fields, and is looking forward to expanding her business to include Durango clients.
Awards and publications: In 1985, Mary Ann was honored as Chicago’s Advertising Woman of the Year, the first woman in healthcare marketing to be so honored. Additionally, she served for three years as a core faculty member and textbook co-author for Marketing in the Arts, a National Arts Marketing Project sponsored by the Arts & Business Council of Chicago.
FLC activities: As a Professional Associates member, Mary Ann is active with the Engineers Without Borders program and enjoys working with students as an advisor for FLC's biweekly student news publication, The Independent.
Volunteer/Community Service: Local volunteer activities have included Music in the Mountains, San Juan Symphony, and Durango Friends of the Arts where Mary Ann held lead responsibility for the development and marketing of Taste the Seasons of Durango, DFA’s fund-raising cook book which realized over $11,500 in profits and sold out in less than five months.
