    This course addresses pedagogical methods for Indigenous language teachers to help with language revitalization instruction in their communities.  Language learning is a powerful way to connect with one's own Native identity. This course explores how to fold exploration of Native identity into language instruction to empower students to teach their Native languages.

    A beginner course in Spanish for students or community members with little or no prior language study, designed to prepare them for embarking on study abroad.

  9. Cultura y Sociedad (BL-316)

    Catalog

    Fluency in a language relates not only to the knowledge of the language but also the awareness of how cultural context changes the way we communicate. The cultural context of Guadalara, Mexico is different than Santiago, Chile which is different from rural Spain. This course through cultural immersion enables students to recognize how to read cultural differences and respond accordingly. 

  10. Ensenanza y Fronteras (BL-395)

    Catalog

    Teaching in a border situation requires not only the knowledge of language and linguistic systems, but a great degree of flexibility, adaptability, and empathy to interact with a diverse classroom. This course explores how we can stretch the boundaries of our comfort zones as global citizens and teachers and face behaviors that might challenge our own cultural assumptions.

  11. Biopolitics: Bodies on the Border (BL-322)

    Catalog

    In this course students learn different concepts and theories of biopolitics including theorists such as Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben. Students apply biopolitical theory to understand the complexity of modern institutions such as education, social health, legal systems and war, with special focus on border policies and immigration laws.
