Scholarships

Applications obtained from and returned to Teacher Education Department.  Contact person:  William A. Camp, Field Experience Coordinator, 242 Education/Business Hall, Fort Lewis College.  Application deadline:  March 14, 2014.  Selection made by Teacher Education Department Selection Committee, unless otherwise noted.  Notification mailed out by April 15, 2014 to recipients.

ROBERT M BARR AND ROBERTA ARMSTRONG BARR FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

  • Certification of CO residency; transcripts; two letters of reference, a 250-300 word essay articulating candidate’s larger purposes for seeking a career as a teacher, description of activities that demonstrate commitment to community, how citizenship will be distilled to pupils, single most important teacher trait, and how education will be financed without this aid. FAFSA required.  $1,500 to $3,000 

EDITH BROCHU MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Elementary teacher education student interested in reading; junior or senior status
  • Must demonstrate financial need.  FAFSA required
  • Transcripts, list of extracurricular activities and awards required
  • Approximate amount of in-state tuition 

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SCHOLARSHIP OF THE LA PLATA COUNTY CHAPTER

  • Any resident of the San Juan River basin; full-time; junior level or better with minimum 60 credit hours; seeking elementary, secondary, or K-12 teacher certification
  • Selection made by Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship Committee, interview required
  • Must demonstrate financial need. FAFSA required
  • $250

GIERSCH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

  • One student who will be completing the Teacher Education Program by enrolling in student teaching at the K-12 level with a major in Science, Exercise Science or Business
  • Awarded to applicant with the highest GPA, must have the recommendation of the Teacher Education Department faculty
  • $500

MARILYN JENNINGS SCHOLARSHIP

  • Seeking admission to Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary or K-12 Teacher Licensure Program; minimum cumulative FLC GPA of 2.50; demonstrated financial need
  • May be used to defray various teacher education program costs including texts; fees for fingerprinting; PLACE tests, and license applications
  • $25 - $100

THE MARY K. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP

  • Must have grown up in La Plata County and graduated from a La Plata County high school
  • Completed minimum 60 credit hours, seeking elementary teacher certification, top cumulative FLC GPA of all applicants, preference given to qualified applicant who demonstrates an interest in and appreciation of music
  • $200

THE JULIE JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Restricted to students interested in early childhood or elementary teaching (no specific major required)
  • 3.00 cumulative FLC GPA, selection based on academic transcript, outside activities involvement and essay
  • $500

THE THEODORE AND EDNA M. JONES SCHOLARSHIP

  • Restricted to students interested in early childhood or elementary teaching (no specific major required)
  • 3.00 cumulative FLC GPA, selection based on academic transcript, outside activities involvement and essay
  • $1,000

THE ALICE LANCASTER "PIONEER" AWARD

  • Full-time student; junior, senior, or post-graduate level, 2.50 cumulative GPA, completed minimum 80 credit hours, enrolled in Teacher Education Department, seeking elementary teacher certification
  • Preference given to applicant with best letter describing his/her educational goals and career plans
  • Must demonstrate financial need, FAFSA required $300

DON R. MAGILL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Full-time student; fourth year student entering last semester before student teaching; enrolled in Teacher Education Department. 
  • Preference given to applicant who is a graduate of Bayfield High School.  Second preference given to graduate of Ignacio High School.  In the absence of candidates of preference, scholarship may be awarded to others. 
  • (Special consideration granted to students planning on student teaching in Bayfield or Ignacio.) 
  • All applicants must include autobiographical essay. Award will cover semester before student teaching and student teaching semester.  Requirements: FAFSA; essay. $500 x 2

SANDRA MAPEL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Must be accepted as a student teacher candidate and earned a cumulative FLC GPA of 2.50 or better
  • Transcripts; list of outside activities; 1 page essay describing the reasons for applying for the scholarship required
  • $1,000  (3 per semester)

THE JOAN KATHLEEN MATHIAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • CO resident, 3.00 cumulative FLC GPA, completed minimum 60 credit hours, seeking elementary, K-12/secondary license.  Post-baccalaureates encouraged to apply.  1-2 awardees.
  • 1000.00 per year

THE MILITARY ORDER OF PURPLE HEART SCHOLARSHIP

  • Sophomore, junior or senior class level; 2.50 cumulative FLC GPA, acceptance into Teacher Education Program, recommendation of Education 324 or 325 instructor required
  • Demonstrated service to disabled population; prior professional training in teaching/aiding disabled required
  • Letter about applicant's career goals, concerns for, experience with and attitudes toward the disabled required
  • $200

CHARLES H. REID SCHOLARSHIP

  • Full time student in good standing, 15 credit hours or more per semester
  • Have and maintain 3.00 GPA each semester
  • Be admitted to the Teacher Licensure Program
  • Preference given to (but not limited to) pre-service mathematics teachers
  • $500

AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARD

  • Open to Juniors, Seniors or Post Bachelor’s students only.  Up to 5 awards available per year.
  • Must be willing to student teach in Ignacio, Mancos or Cortez schools.  (Or other school that meets criteria)
  • Must comply with AmeriCorps guidelines & paperwork for projects, including:
    -School must meet one of the following AmeriCorps criteria: Title 1 status; 50%>Free or Reduced Lunch Program; Low/Unsatisfactory test scores in statewide academic assessments.
    -Be a K-12 program in a public school, government agency or non-profit

-Must work with the same group of students for term of service.
-Must complete semester in the classroom even if the minimum number of 675 hours are completed.
-Must complete value added project for school community and incorporate it into lesson plans & personal reflection

  • Selection made based on 200-300 word essay demonstrating commitment to community & service learning.

$2,150 education award.  Award can be used to pay tuition, school loans, future education
