Colorado law (CRS 23-1-113) requires all incoming freshmen and transfer students to be assessed for their basic skills in writing and mathematics. The assessments are made according to procedures approved by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. If we are missing the information required for assessment or a second assessment is needed, students must take a placement test (ACCUPLACER) on campus. Students who fail to take the assessment/placement test within 30 days of the beginning of the term will have a hold placed on their academic records. FLC calls this the BS hold for Basic Skills. Students are notified of the hold via their Fort Lewis College student email account prior to the upcoming course registration window. This hold will prevent a student from registering for future classes.
Colorado law (CRS 23-1-113) also requires students to show they are college-level in math, and writing by the time they complete 30 credits (reach sophomore level). This requirement was created by a law passed by the Legislature in 2000. Since this law took effect students have been notified via their student email account that they needed to complete remedial coursework. Effective July 1, 2004 Fort Lewis College is obligated to counsel students they are out of compliance with the law and that they need to complete their remediation.
