Miss Julie

Written by August Strindberg.
Directed by Kurt Lancaster.

Strindberg placed his characters in scenes filled with unforgiving, unromantic sexual tension and emotional violence - kinds of scenes unheard of up until that time (1888). His characters desire and abuse each other. Miss Julie is a frightening play because we see such scenes played out in lives around us. Strindberg's characters ar as complicated as real human beings who upon discovering what it is to desire someone, then lose them. It's a play about sex, desire, hate and death. It's a play about us.

A Servant of Two Masters

Written by Carlo Goldoni.
Adapted by Dorothy Louise by a special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Directed by Joel Eis.

Carlo Goldoni was know for his free swinging yet good-natured sense of humor. He considered all aspects of life as grist for his comic mill. A premiere example of this is A Servant of Two Masters and the show has been in constant production since the day the ink dried on his parchment "sides" (sections of the text given to each actor) because it truly touches many nerves. The central idea, that a person cannot serve successfully more than one "master," which must truly be a matter of the heart, is woven through concerns for money, love, position and security. Passion wins over practicality and the characters dare all to follow their hearts. It is fitting that an Italian writer made such work.
