Craig Childs, author of Apocalyptic Planet, to speak at Fort Lewis College

Craig Childs, author of Apocalyptic Planet: Field Guide to the Future of the Earth, will visit campus for a presentation and book signing on Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. The event will take place at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

A second chance to hear from Mr. Childs and get a book signed will be Thursday, February 9 in the Student Union Ballroom at 12:45 p.m. Free tickets for both the Concert Hall event and the Ballroom event are available at FLC’s Reed Library, the Durango Public Library, and Maria’s Bookshop. Tickets are going fast.

Prior to Thursday’s presentation, Mr. Childs will be at a reception in Reed Library from 9:30 – 11 a.m. At 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Child’s will lead a discussion on writing and publishing in Noble Hall, Rm. 130. Both the Reed Library event and the Noble Hall event are free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary.

Apocalyptic Planet is this year’s Fort Lewis College Common Reading Experience selection. Each year, the College selects one book for all of campus to read. The selection is integrated into classroom discussions and other College and community events.

“Ours is not a stable planet,” reads Apocalyptic Planet’s back cover. “It is prone to sudden, violent natural disasters and extremes of climate. In this exhilarating exploration of our globe, Craig Childs goes to where the apocalypse can be seen now.

“From the driest deserts of Chile, through the genetic wasteland of central Iowa, to the site of the drowned land bridge of the Bering Sea, Childs uncovers cataclysms that tell us what could be next: forthcoming ice ages, super volcanoes, and the conclusion of planetary life cycles. He delivers a sensual feast in descriptions of the natural world, and offers undeniable science that reveals both the earth’s strengths and frailties. Bearing witness to the planet’s sweeping and perilous changes, he shows how we can alter the future, and how the world will live on, though humans may not survive to see it.”
