FLC honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with day of service and march

Fort Lewis College Diversity Collaborative are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with activities on campus, including a march and service project.

The Diversity Collaborative and students from the Black Student Union organized the day's events under the theme, "Because He Had a Dream We Can..." Members of the campus community were encouraged to reflect on what is possible for them today because of the dream of King and actions of other rights activists in the pursuit of equity and justice. Staff, faculty, and students shared their thoughts on whiteboards in the Student Union.

  • "Because he had a dream, I can change lives."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can not be judged by color, sex, or where I am from."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can talk about my white privilege."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can advocate for economic equality."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can study in a multicultural setting."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can speak freely."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can become a doctor in medicine."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can love who I choose."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can better know myself and how to support others."
  • "Because he had a dream, I can teach others his dream and continue his dream."

The campus service project is a blanket making session. The goal is for 60 blankets to be made and delivered to Manna Soup Kitchen and Volunteers of America in Durango. The day will culminate with the movie, "I am Not Your Negro," and a spoken word session. The full schedule of activities is at www.fortlewis.edu/diversity.
