Grant awards from May to October 2017
Over five months, nineteen faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $885 to $1,285,000.
Elizabeth Bahe, Director, Native American Center, received $180,000 for “Retention Program Through Support” from the John and Sophie Ottens Foundation to fund NAC activities for 2017-18.
Elizabeth Bussian, Director, Engagement and Annual Giving, received $59,045 over four years from the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative to fund scholarships for students attending FLC from La Plata and Montezuma counties, and $13,167 for other students attending FLC.
Sherell Byrd, Professor, Biology, received $1,859 from the Ballantine Family Fund for the “Lifelong Learning Speaker Series with Richard Grossman.”
Marya Corrigan, Director, TRIO Upward Bound, was awarded $1,285,000 over five years to fund the TRIO Upward Bound program which provides 50 low-income, first generation regional high school students per year with high quality academic support services and a Summer Academy to help them succeed in high school and prepare them for post secondary education.
Marya Corrigan, Director, TRIO Upward Bound, received $6,387 from the Colorado Department of Education Summer Food Service program for meals for Upward Bound students participating in the 2017 Summer Academy.
Peggy Ferguson, Director, Campbell Child and Family Center, received $24,000 from the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation for tuition support for low income families using the Campbell Center for daycare.
Kathleen Fine-Dare, Professor, Anthropology, and Shelby Tisdale, Director, Center of Southwest Studies, received $89,878 over two years from the National Park Service for “NAGPRA FY2017 Consultation Grant” to support the documentation of a portion of the Center’s NAGPRA collections and provide travel funds for Native tribes to participate in consultations that will assist the Center in revising its NAGPRA inventory.
Marianne Gurule-Hardy, Associate Director, Financial Aid, received $15,000 from the Boettcher Foundation for the “Boettcher Opportunity Award” to fund student scholarships.
Kristine Greer, Associate Dean and Professor, Teacher Education, received $19,000 from the Colorado Department of Education for the “Race To The Top Early Learning Challenge Fund Scholarships” to fund scholarships for students with declared majors in early childhood education.
Kristine Greer, Associate Dean and Professor, Teacher Education, received $221,840 over four years from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education for “Childcare Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) 2017” to provide wrap-around, before and after school services and cover gaps in tuition funding for low-income, Pell grant qualitied student-parents with children ages 1-5 at the Center.
Wendy Javier, Director, TRIO Talent Search, received $20,000 from the Moniker Foundation for scholarship funding for 20 TRIO Talent Search Scholars in the 2017-18 school year.
Wendy Javier, Director, TRIO Talent Search and Marya Corrigan, Director, TRIO Upward Bound, received $885 from the Durango Education Foundation for “Tech for TRIO” to fund computers for the Durango High School TRIO classroom.
Dian Jenkins, Director, Disability Services, received $1,100 from the Ballantine Family Fund for “2017 Ballantine Family Fund AT” to purchase assistive technology equipment for student use.
Beth LaShell, Coordinator, Old Fort at Hesperus, received $8,568 from the State Historical Fund for “Historical Structure Assessment for House #15” to support a comprehensive structural assessment of the historic Faculty house at the Old Fort campus.
Charles Leslie, Director, Community Concert Hall, received $10,000 from Colorado Creates over two years to support Concert Hall activities. He also received $2,375 from the Western Arts Federation Tour West Performance Grant to fund the Flamenco Vivo dance performance and outreach program and $2,250 from the Western Arts Federation Tour West to fund the Jarabe Mexicano performance and outreach program.
Bryant Liggett, Station Manager, KDUR, received $1,500 from the Gill Foundation/Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado for “2017 Gill Foundation” to support daily underwriting at the station in 2017.
Ross McCauley, Associate Professor, Biology, received $58,674 over 4 years from the National Science Foundation for “Digitization TCN: Collaborative Research: Using Herbarium Data To Document Plant Niches In The High Peaks And High Plains Of The Southern Rockies: Past, Present, And Future” as a research subaward with the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Megan Paciaroni, Associate Professor, Physics/Engineering, received $639,294 over two years from the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation program for “Acquisition of an Amplified Ultrashort Pulse Laser for Imaging and Spectroscopy.”
Ryan Smith, Associate Professor, Physics / Engineering, received $29,900 from the Animas La Plata Project to produce a full bathymetric model of Lake Nighthorse in Durango, Colorado.
Les Sommerville, Professor, Chemistry, was awarded $18,000 from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) for “Science Scholars: The Native American Path (SSNAP)” to fund travel expenses for 30 Native American STEM students from FLC to attend the 2016 SACNAS National Conference.
Shelby Tisdale, Director, Center of Southwest Studies, received $25,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Museums for America Program for “IMLS 2016” to support collections stewardship to systematically inventory, document, catalogue, and digitize the Center’s collections with the goal of assuring that the catalogue records, digital images and metadata are accurate, searchable and discoverable online.
Mary Shepherd, Deputy Director, Small Business Development Center, received $6,000 from the La Plata County Public Service Agency to fund general operations for 2017.
