Hero’s legacy lives on at Fort Lewis College

Captain Jeff Kuss

On June 2, 2016, word reached Fort Lewis College and Durango that Captain Jeff Kuss (Economics, ’06) had died in a crash while preparing for a Blue Angels performance. Captain Kuss was chosen to fly for the prestigious Blue Angels squadron in 2014. The loss of the Fort Lewis College alumnus and son of Durango hit campus and the community hard. People came together to mourn and to honor the memory of a fallen hero.

In their time of grief, the Kuss family thought of how their son’s life could continue to inspire and help others, and so they created the Captain Jeff Kuss Endowed Scholarship at Fort Lewis College. The community quickly supported the new scholarship and today, one year later, the Captain Jeff Kuss Endowed Scholarship stands fully endowed and ready to be awarded for the first time beginning fall 2017.

Per the Kuss family’s wishes, the scholarship will go to support a U.S. military veteran or child of a veteran attending FLC. The award is renewable based on the student’s progress toward a degree, meaning the scholarship can follow a student through to graduation.

“We are so proud to have Captain Jeff Kuss as a Fort Lewis College alumnus,” say FLC President Dene Thomas. “The way our FLC alumni and the community rallied around the Kuss family and helped FLC make this scholarship a reality shows the impact this young man’s life had on all of us.”
