Fort Lewis College Art & Design Faculty

2022 Faculty Biennial

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 15 from 4:30 - 6 p.m.

Panel Discussion: Tuesday, October 4 from 1 - 2 p.m.

The Art Gallery at Fort Lewis College is proud to open its doors to the community for the 2022 Faculty Biennial. Exhibiting works by Paul Booth, David Cahoon, Meghan Chase, Chad Colby, Jay Dougan, Tony Holmquist, Julia Klema, Melissa Sclafani, and Amy K. Wendland; the show offers unique insight into the perspectives of FLC Art & Design professors regarding politics, identity, and daily life. The exhibit includes a multitude of mediums ranging from sculptures to collages and video to textiles. Whether you are an art connoisseur or just a lover of art, this exhibit evokes the interest of all audiences.

Colby finds beauty in the mundane with his abstract painting, Grocery List, and takes a comedic approach to the myth of Sisyphus with a digital video entitled “The Comedy of Futility” said Orson Welles of Buster Keaton. Holmquist, uses his lyrics “Running down the mountainside…” as inspiration, he creates two intaglio prints connecting and recreating song in visual form.

Booth, Dougan, and Sclafani tackle domestic and international politics in powerful 3D works, questioning American identity and our responsibility to our country and others through dynamic use of sculpture and design. Klema and Wendland steer the political conversation towards environmentalism, commenting on the relationship between people and nature by incorporating pastels, watercolor, and other mixed media together to create vibrant landscapes.

Emphasizing the importance of art as a form of personal expression, Chase and Cahoon look inward for inspiration to their pieces. In an intimate look at how to process time, Chase captures two years with the stains in her bedding and creates a new textile. Cahoon uses both digital and analog collage techniques to sort through pop culture icons and images as autobiography.

For those interested in a deeper look into the work being displayed and the perspectives of FLC faculty, join us for a panel discussion with David Cahoon, Cory Pillen, Amy K Wendland, and Melissa Sclafani on Tuesday, October 4th at 1 p.m. in the Art Gallery.
