Round of good news

July 16, 2020

Dear FLC:

I wanted to share with everyone two exciting updates we received on Tuesday. First, the Trump administration rescinded its rule issued last week that would have barred international students from attending college in the U.S. if the school were to operate online only. While FLC is offering in-person instruction in the fall, this ruling would have limited our ability to remain nimble during this pandemic and best serve the students who choose to pursue a degree at FLC. FLC joined state-wide and national efforts to fight the ruling and we are thankful the Trump administration listened to reason and the arguments by our colleagues across the state and nation.

Second, on Tuesday afternoon Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a bill that effectively paves the way for funding for the Health Sciences Center. Our State Legislature and Gov. Polis found a creative solution for FLC to receive funding this year and I couldn’t be more grateful. This will elevate our health sciences programs and drastically change the way we can deliver curriculum, as well as serve our region. This has been a long-awaited bit of news from the state, after years of lobbying and collaborating with the Legislature. The cherry on top: the FLC Foundation also completed fundraising for the building this spring, bringing in a $2 million gift from the Schlessman Family Foundation. With this generous gift in hand and assuming we receive the state funding soon, we could break ground on the HSC this fall.

The coronavirus has felt all-consuming but our work on building the future of FLC hasn’t stopped. Tuesday was a really great day and I know we have even better days ahead of us. Thank you for all you do for FLC. Let’s keep going.

I hope you and your family are in good health.

Best, Tom
