Campus life is about more than where students sleep or eat. It is about whether they feel safe, supported, connected, and able to build healthy routines.

At FLC, students live and learn in a close campus community surrounded by Durango and the San Juan Mountains.

Campus safety

Fort Lewis College has a dedicated Police Department. These are trained law enforcement officers, not security guards. Officers patrol campus, respond to emergencies, enforce state and local laws, and work in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.

Families should know how students receive emergency alerts, how to contact campus police, and where to find safety resources before the semester begins.

Emergency alerts

FLC uses Skyhawk Alert to communicate urgent information through email, mobile notifications, the college website, and official social media channels.  Students and employees receive alerts through their official FLC email and the cell phone number listed in their student account.

Families can remind students to keep their phone number updated and check their FLC email regularly.

Dining options give students convenient access to meals and gathering spaces throughout the week. Families should review meal plan options, dietary accommodations, and dining locations before students arrive.

Resource centers and belonging

Students do better when they feel connected. FLC offers resource centers, student organizations, and programs that help students find community, cultural connection, support, and leadership opportunities.

These spaces help students meet people, ask questions, build confidence, and find support from people who understand their experiences.

These may include:

  • Black Student Union
  • Diversity Collaborative programs
  • El Centro de Muchos Colores
  • First-generation student support
  • Gender & Sexuality Resource Center
  • Native American Center

Getting involved

Involvement helps students make friends, build confidence, and feel more connected to campus. Students can participate in clubs, events, outdoor programs, intramurals, student media, sustainability work, arts events, and athletics.

Families can encourage students to try at least one activity, organization, or campus event during their first semester.

Life in Durango

Durango is part of the FLC experience. Students have access to trails, rivers, public lands, ski areas, local businesses, arts, and community events. The location gives students many ways to explore, recharge, and connect outside the classroom.
