Fort Lewis College President Dene Thomas was elected chair of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) President’s Council in April. The chair is chosen from the presidents of the institutions represented within the conference.

The RMAC oversees the Division II athletic programs from 15 colleges and universities across the region, including Fort Lewis College. In the last two decades, RMAC schools have won more than 50 Division II national championships, including three for the FLC Men’s Soccer Team.

Student athletes in the RMAC also excel academically and are recognized each year on the Academic All-RMAC Team. In 2011, the FLC Women’s Basketball Team earned the highest overall GPA in the country in any division (I, II, III, NAIA, and junior/community college).

As chair of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference President’s Council, President Thomas’ job will be to continue the conference’s tradition of excellence and move it forward.

“Athletics and active campuses are important parts of the college experience,” says President Thomas. “In working with the RMAC, my goal is to make sure our student athletes get the opportunities they need, both on the field and in the classroom, and that athletics is used to enrich the lives of all the students at all the RMAC schools.”
