Beyond just the opportunity to share knowledge with other institutions, Fort Lewis College came away from the summit with one of 11 $10,000 grants, thanks to the Lumina Foundation. The funding will go toward FLC initiatives designed to help Native Americans and Alaska Natives find educational success.

As a Native American-Serving, Nontribal Institution with a significant Latinx population and advanced teaching and research facilities housed within a new $35 million building, Fort Lewis College is well suited to help the National Science Foundation reach its research and diversity goals.

Students earning their master’s degree at Fort Lewis College can either earn the TESOL or Colorado’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse endorsement. FLC is the only Colorado school and one of only four New Mexico institutions to offer the TESOL.

As institutions with large minority student populations that also serve rural areas, Fort Lewis College and San Juan College are well-suited to respond to the need for more teachers in remote areas, not only in Colorado, but New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah as well. 

This new partnership, along with new FLC programs like the Pre-Health Certificate, will add to the College’s health sciences offerings, giving students more avenues to join the healthcare field. The College was also recently awarded just over $3 million to begin designing a new Health Sciences & Athletics Complex on campus.
