Grant awards from March - May 2017

Over three months, nine faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $750 to $120,000.

Lara Aase, Librarian, Center of Southwest Studies, received $750 from the American Indian Library Association for “Southwestern Stories at Delaney Library: Southwest Summer Storytime” to fund nine storytelling sessions held during summer 2017 that will feature stories from the oral traditions of different Native America groups.

Bill Collins, Assistant Professor, Chemistry, received $10,000 from the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign for “Phytochemical as Varroacides: The Synthesis and Evaluation of Propolis-Based Natural Products” to combat honey bee colony decline through novel, botanically-derived miticides.

Jennifer Gay, Director, International Programs, received $8,000 from the University Studies Abroad Consortium for “USAC Curriculum Integration Grant Phase Two.”

Amy Gilley, Technical Director/Lecturer, Theatre, received a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute award to support her participation in a three-week residency at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC this June where she will engage in seminars with ten distinguished Visiting Scholars in the field of Native American ethnohistory. 

Jeff Jessing, Assistant Professor, Physics/Engineering, received $31,000 from Sandia National Laboratories for “Modeling of Porous Silicon Field Emission and Optical Reflectance” to establish a summer student experience to investigate and attempt to advance the state-of-the-art in data collection and modeling of the optical and electrical properties of porous silicon.

Katie Mouzakis, Assistant Professor, Chemistry, received $100,000 over three years from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement as a 2017 Cottrell Scholar to support her research “Structural Basis of -1 Programmed Ribosomal Frameshifting in Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type I.”

Billy Nollet, Assistant Professor, Physics/Engineering, received $120,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy through a subaward with the University of Wisconsin to fund the “Enhancement of Electromechanical Pump performance through modeling and testing” project.

Liz Ross, Director, Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center, received $2,500 from the Ballantine Family Fund to support their business advisor network consultants who provide targeted one-on-one business counseling to small business clients in the region through the SBDC Rural Outreach Program.

Ryan Smith, Associate Professor, Physics/Engineering, received $1,000 from the LPEA Education fund to support the “LPEA Acabotics” project to develop a Microdredger Robotic Vehicle for Roger’s Reservoir maintenance after the Gold King mine spill.
