Greetings new and returning Skyhawks

August 29, 2022

Greetings, new and returning Skyhawks,

On behalf of the faculty and staff for Fort Lewis College, let me say how thrilled we are to have you on campus. In the last few days, I’ve had the chance to connect with many new students and their families. Witnessing their excitement makes me feel fortunate to be a part of this caring community. It makes me feel eager to connect with our returning Skyhawks, and it makes me feel gratitude for our student leaders who do a fantastic job representing you.

There is so much to be proud about at FLC: our amazing location, our dedicated and expert faculty and staff, our commitment to students, and the richness of our diversity. We are also celebrating the launch of innovative programs and monumental funding to support our academic and well-being initiatives. Additionally, this fall promises more exciting in-person connections than ever before. You will be engaged in active, hands-on learning and lively discussions in our small classes. You will be joining friends at our welcoming affinity centers and student clubs. And you will be enjoying our beautiful campus by attending outdoor events, from plaza parties to athletic games.

In her welcome to new students, Provost Nixon said that while the faculty and staff come to work to do the best job we can possibly do, we count on students to hold us accountable to improve the institution that we care for so deeply. We know that FLC faces real issues surrounding student well-being, mental health, and basic needs. We also need to continue our ongoing institutional work in racial reconciliation. In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing from key members of the FLC leadership team describing the actions we are taking to create the most supportive learning environment possible for all students.

The FLC community is full of compassionate people who take that extra step to help their colleagues, friends, and peers achieve great things. We need community now more than ever, and I feel incredibly grateful and inspired to be a part of yours.

Let’s have a great year,

Tom
