Ignacio couple's legacy to help their hometown students attend Fort Lewis College

Kenneth and Eula Mae Morris may no longer be with us, but their memory and legacy will live on at Fort Lewis College (FLC) for generations to come. The FLC Foundation has announced a gift of over $200,000 to establish the Eula Mae and Kenneth L. Morris Scholarship in honor of the longtime Ignacio, CO, residents. The endowed scholarship will help Ignacio High School students attend Fort Lewis College.

Kenneth passed away in May 2016. He graduated from Durango High School before joining the military and later attending Colorado State University. Following his education, Kenneth worked at the Economy Store in Ignacio, eventually taking it over until his retirement in 1989.

Eula Mae was an elementary school teacher for 50 years, 42 of those years spent in Ignacio. Her efforts to help her students was recognized with a Colorado Teacher of the Year honor in 1989. She also taught piano and, as the Morris’ obituary notes, Eula Mae had hundreds of teddy bears that were given to her as gifts of appreciation over the years. She also passed away in 2016, less than three months after her husband.

Friends and family of Kenneth and Eula Mae remember them living a simple life, but with a passion for helping others. The Eula Mae and Kenneth L. Morris Scholarship will touch the lives of many Ignacio students and help those students earn a life-changing college degree.

“Kenneth and Eula Mae are an example of two people who understood the value of an education and how it can affect a person’s life,” says FLC President Dene Thomas. “I wish I’d had the opportunity to thank them for their generosity, but I can promise that their investment in the lives of young people from Ignacio will be a credit to their name for years to come.”
