Suicide Prevention at Fort Lewis College

Suicide is a significant public health problem in our country and our community. At Fort Lewis College, we do not shy away from the topic of suicide but instead have an array of suicide prevention programs available to our community. We believe every community member can reach out to a student, staff, faculty, loved one, or others outside our campus community.

We proudly offer the following tools to help suicide intervention and prevention.

QPR Training

qpr question persuade refer text with backgroundQuestion, Persuade, and Refer (QPR), is a training program for suicide prevention similar to a CPR course teaching non-medical professionals to assist with cardiac emergencies.

QPR is a 1.5 hour evidence-based training that teaches how to recognize possible signs of suicide, talk with someone contemplating suicide, and connect suicidal individuals with appropriate resources. Several QPR instructors are available to facilitate training on campus and in the community.

Become a QPR Instructor

We are looking for faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and expertise across campus willing to complete the QPR Self-Study Course to become certified QPR instructors. You do not need experience in mental health to become a QPR instructor. You can complete this 12-hour course on your own time.

Mental Health First Aid

Sometimes, first aid isn’t a bandage, CPR, the Heimlich, or calling 911. Sometimes, first aid is YOU! Someone you know could be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. In fact, you are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental health crisis than someone having a heart attack.

Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to someone showing signs of a mental illness or crisis and connect them with the appropriate professional or self-help care. FLC offers this 8-hour course 1-2 times per academic year. To find out more, contact the Student Wellness Initiatives Coordinator.

Other programs

We have a variety of other programs and educational campaigns related to suicide prevention throughout the year, mainly in collaboration with the student organization WellPAC.

Check the FLC calendar regularly for upcoming events, and follow WellPAC on Facebook and Instagram (@flcwellpac) to find out what's next!
