How to...

1098 Tax Form
  • The 1098T is a form to report qualified tuition and related expenses for possible education tax credits.
  • Qualified tuition and related expenses include tuition and required fees for eligible post-secondary educational institutions.
    • Typically, housing and meals are not eligible costs
  • The expenses must be paid during an academic period that begins in the same tax year or the first three months of the following tax year.
  • If a student did not receive a 1098T in the mail, it may be because their balance on the account was less than the amount they received for grants and scholarships.
  • Students can still access and print the 1098T form on WebOpus for the correct tax year if they choose to do so.

Students can access the 1098T form by logging into WebOpus, selecting Student Services, and then My Billing Information.

Eligibility Requirements for Financial Aid

There are some eligibility requirements to keep your Financial Aid. You must meet specific requirements, such as:

  • United States citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Admitted to Fort Lewis College
  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program, certificate program, or the Teacher Licensing Program
  • Not in default on a student loan or owe an overpayment of a federal grant
FAFSA application

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA helps you to be considered for all types of financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study employment that you can use to help pay for your college education. The results determine your financial aid file, so it's important to complete the form as accurately and early as possible to maximize your financial aid package.

Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

Students must show "financial need" to receive federal, state, and private financial aid. When a student completes the FAFSA, the Federal Department of Education uses a formula to determine a student's Student Aid Index (formerly the Expected Family Contribution). The Financial Aid Office uses your SAI number to determine your eligibility for different types of financial aid.

Calculating your financial need

Cost of Attendance (COA) - Student Aid Index = Financial Need

Need-based aid is financial aid you can receive if you have financial need and meet other eligibility criteria. You can't accept more need-based aid than the amount of your financial need.

The following are examples of federal non-need-based student aid programs:

Summer Session Financial Aid

Fort Lewis College does not have designated aid for summer. Summer financial aid is usually limited to Federal Direct Loans and, in some cases, a Federal Pell Grant. To be considered for summer financial aid, students should:

  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the summer to be considered for Federal Direct Loans
  • Have a valid FAFSA application on file
  • Not be on academic disqualification
  • Not be on financial aid suspension
  • Not have borrowed their annual loan limits
  • Not have reached their lifetime Pell Grant or Federal loan limits

Students MUST consult with the Financial Aid Office before adjusting their summer schedule to avoid having to pay back any of their summer aid.

After registration, the Financial Aid Office will email students starting in April each year with a link to view their summer financial aid package.

Verifying Financial Aid documents

If you are selected for verification, our office needs to confirm the information on your FAFSA application before we can determine your eligibility for need-based aid. Don't assume you've done something wrong if you've been chosen for verification.

The most common types of verification documents requested:

  • Student's and parent's IRS tax transcript.
  • Parents' and/or students' W-2(s)
  • Verification Worksheets
  • Copies of social security cards
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage licenses
  • Income and expense statements
  • Asset statements
  • Eligible non-citizen status documents

If you did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you must provide our office with an official Federal Income Tax Return Transcript for verification. If you are a dependent student, we will also need a copy of your parent's or parents' Federal Income Tax Transcript.

Tax filers can request Federal Tax Return Transcript information free of charge by:

Tax filers who cannot get an IRS Tax Return Transcript because of IRS identity theft submit a Tax Return DataBase View (TRDBV) instead along with a signed and dated statement indicating that they were victims of tax-related identity theft and that the IRS is aware of it.

  • You will be referred to the Identity Protection Specialized Unit (IPSU), the toll-free number 800-908-4490.
  • To get a TRDBV, tax filers should call the Identity Protection Specialized Unit (IPSU) at 800-908-4490 and ask them to mail a TRDBV.
