How do I find a job or internship?

  1. Get help: Talk to Career Services, Advisor, Boss, Parents, etc.
  2. Set a schedule: Set aside time each day/week to search for jobs/internships.
  3. Get organized: Create a system for timelines, resumes, cover letters, and position descriptions for each position you apply to.
  4. Research: Review companies you would like to work for and determine what types of jobs interest you. Not sure? Try brainstorming exercises, job shadow, or do informational interviews. Look for field specific sites under What Major to Choose?
  5. Build Connections: Let your people (friends, family, faculty, professionals) know you're actively looking for a job/internship.Ask for advice.
  6. Social media: Utilize LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc. to search for potential jobs and connect with employers.
  7. Plan ahead: Expect it will take you 3 – 6 months to find a field specific job. Per job, estimate a 3-month time frame for the process from application - interview - reference checks - offer to acceptance - relocation - background checks and the first day.
  8. Keep trying! Quality is better than quantity. Try new approaches and talking to new people. There is no one “right” way to search for jobs or internships.
