What are the deadlines?

  • Thursday, April 4: Student speakers to fill out the Student Speaker Information Form by 12:00 noon. (this includes abstracts and speaker availability)
  • Friday, April 5: Poster presenters to fill out the Student Poster Presenter Form by 5:00pm.
  • Tuesday, April 16: Oral presenters upload slides into shared folder on One Drive (look in Canvas for link)
  • Thursday, April 18: Symposium presentations

Check with your faculty mentor for the style of your discipline. Here is an example abstract to help you think about the format.

Prepare your talk or poster

Oral presentation guidelines:

  • Length: 15 minutes MAX (including time for questions).
    Recommended length 10 – 12 MIN talk with 3-5 MIN for Q&A.
  • Slides submitted in PowerPoint or Adobe Acrobat ONLY!
    Deadline to submit slides: April 11th by 5 PM.
    All electronic presentation materials will be pre-loaded on the day of the event onto the room’s computer.
  • Presentations must be made live in person!
    Recordings are acceptable as part of a performance.
    PowerPoint presentations should not be recorded with a voice-over.
  • A moderator will introduce you at the beginning of your presentation and have your presentation ready. 
    A podium, remote & electronic pointer will be available for each presentation (no need to bring your own).
  • Arrive to present 20 MIN BEFORE your scheduled time. 

Poster session guidelines:

  • Size: Must fit on a 40" x 60" board.
    Design your poster with advice from your faculty mentor. See example poster template.
  • Print your poster on one of the campus plotters (Berndt 570, Reed 001, EBH 010.)
    PRINT YOUR POSTER EARLY! There are only three campus plotters and classes are taught in Berndt 570.

Event day - Thursday April 19, 2019:

  • Bring your poster to the Student Life Center by 12:30 PM.
    Posters can be hung up starting at 9:30 am.
  • Find your poster number and numbered easel on one of the poster lists available in the Student Life Center.
    Use the provided small Velcro tabs to attaching your poster to the foam board.
  • Poster presentations are from 12:45-2:00 pm. Plan to be there the whole time.
    Prepare a 30-second and 2-minute version of your poster talk highlighting the key points.
    The audience (students, staff, faculty, community members, graduate school & employer representatives) will circulate around the room, talking to the presenters.

Come to the Symposium!

  • Please come and support your fellow students by listening to their talks and visiting their posters.
  • Presenters should dress professionally. (Ask your mentor for advice about what is "professional" in your discipline.)
