Information & communication

You receive a 2GB FLC email account that operates as a crucial communication channel.

Accessing your FLC email

Your email address is username@fortlewis.edu. There are many ways to get to your email, so choose the best way for you:

Check your FLC email regularly

Make sure to check your FLC email as often as you can because FLC faculty and staff send emails for:

  • Campus-wide announcements about upcoming events, speakers, concerts, road closures, and more
  • Faculty may contact you about class cancellations, changes in due dates, visits to office hours, announcements about your online course, and everything else class-related.
  • Student Support offices like Financial Aid, Outdoor Pursuits, the Native American Center, Peer Tutoring, etc.,  contact you about appointments, events, or meetings.

Writing an email to your professor

Your faculty are an essential element of your community at FLC. Allow them an opportunity to get to know you, and you may find a lifelong ally who will help you out in your future endeavors, from job references to graduate school applications to being a mentor! It all starts with an email.

Students and faculty often use email to discuss anything related to their courses. You may find yourself writing to:

  • Discuss an issue accessing the course or course materials
  • Address a missed assignment or exam
  • Request an extension for a due date
  • Introduce yourself!

Whatever the reason, your FLC faculty would love to hear from you. Some faculty prefer to follow up with students in a face-to-face meeting, either in person, by phone, or virtually using Zoom. In your course syllabus or your Canvas course, your faculty usually give a timeline for when you can expect a response. Keep in mind, asking for an extension at 3 a.m. for an 8 a.m. deadline will be read later.

Steps to writing an email:

  1. Address your professor in the way they have requested, or if in doubt, use their title in your greeting; for example: "Good morning, Dr. Rodriguez."
  2. Make sure you identify who you are and the class you are in. Many of your faculty teach more than one class, so using the course name, number, and section is helpful, like CO 150-22.
  3. Be very clear and professional in your tone, explaining why you are contacting them
  4. It would help if you acknowledged your availability to meet in case they want to continue the conversation.
