Theft Prevention

College campuses can be a target for thefts. Following a few basic guidelines can help keep your bicycle safe. Register your bike. It's the most reliable way to get a stolen bike back to you. Protect your bicycle with a quality bike lock. Always lock your bicycle, even if you’re only gone for a minute. Lock the bicycle to a bike rack by securing the frame of the bicycle to the rack. Using two locks is better than using one! Keep a copy of your bicycles serial number in your wallet. If you believe your bicycle was stolen, call the Police Department Dispatch at 970-385-2900.

Locating your Bicycle Serial Number

The best chance at recovering a stolen bicycle is having a registered serial number.

  • Where to Find It
The majority of serial numbers are located under the bottom bracket where the two pedal cranks meet. Turn your bike upside down and record the number. If there is no serial number near the cranks, you should check other common places including the front headset or rear stays. The diagram (below) indicates five of the most common serial number locations.
  • How to Register without a Serial Number
If you can’t find a serial number, you can still register your bicycle with the Fort Lewis College Police Department. To do so, bring the bicycle to the Fort Lewis College Police Department, located at Aspen Hall.
