Celebrate Black History Month at FLC

Join us this February in honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black communities throughout Black History Month. All month long, Fort Lewis College will host events highlighting stories of resilience, creativity, and progress.

From hands‑on workshops and thought‑provoking discussions to performances and community gatherings, each event offers a chance to learn, reflect, and connect.

Kick-off for Black History Month

Vallecito Room, Student Union

Join us as we officially kick off Black History Month with an evening of connection, reflection, and celebration. This event sets the tone for the month ahead, honoring Black history, culture, and contributions while building community across campus. The Fort Lewis College and Durango community are welcome!

Fry Bread & Fried Chicken Collaboration with NAC

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Native American Center, Student Union

Come together for a collaborative cultural dinner featuring fry bread and fried chicken. Hosted in partnership with the Native American Center, this event celebrates shared histories, food traditions, and community through conversation and connection.

And We Are STILL Not Saved: On Freedom presented by Dr.Hodge.

Presented by Danielle Hodge, Ph.D.

Ballroom, Student Union

Join us to hear from CU Boulder’s Professor Dr.Hodge for a thought-provoking talk on the continuing fight for equality. The Fort Lewis College and Durango community are welcome! 

Danielle Hodge, PhD, employs a critical race theoretical approach to identity, culture, and language. In particular, she is concerned with how systems of oppression, marginalization, and liberation inform the identities, discursive practices, and experiences of African Americans.

Black History Month Basketball Games

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Whalen Gymnasium

Celebrate Black History Month while cheering on our Skyhawks! Both Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams will compete in special games honoring Black athletes, history, and contributions to sports and culture. The Black Student Resource Center will be on site with swag and T-shirts, a halftime video, and face painting throughout the game. The Fort Lewis College and Durango community are welcome!

An evening dedicated to celebrating Black excellence, achievement, and culture. Join the Black Student Union for a night of African food from Chef Safari and dancing.
