Professional Associates (PA) is a community of nearly 50 educators, scientists, innovators, business leaders, policymakers, and professionals who bring their real-world experience to support Fort Lewis College. Members share a commitment to strengthening student learning, enriching faculty teaching, and advancing community partnerships across the Four Corners.


Expertise across disciplines

PA members represent seven core areas of expertise:

  • Medicine, public health, and life sciences
  • Engineering, physical sciences, and technology
  • Environmental science and ecology
  • Education, sociology, and community development
  • Arts, communication, and humanities
  • Leadership, strategy, and organizational management
  • Law, policy, and government service

This breadth of knowledge allows PA members to serve as guest lecturers, mentors, advisors, and collaborators—bringing valuable insight to classrooms, academic programs, and community initiatives.


History and purpose

Professional Associates was established in 1999 by President Kendall Blanchard as a strategic advisory group. Since then, its role has expanded to include direct support for students, faculty, and community programming—while maintaining a strong advisory partnership with college leadership.

Mary Sue Burnham

Career Profile

Mary Sue Burnham has dedicated her life to her family, community, and various volunteer efforts. She has supported her husband's academic career while raising two children and fostering an active family lifestyle centered on hiking, skiing, and international travel.

Professionally, she has held administrative roles, including

  • Secretary, Department of Romance Languages, Harvard University (1960-1962)
  • Church Secretary/Administrator (1971-1986)
  • Office Support, Manpower, Inc. (1988-1990)
  • Office Support, Camp Waukeela, Eaton Center, NH (1990-1992)

Community Involvement

Mary Sue has a long history of volunteerism, serving as a Den Mother, library page, Sunday School teacher, and publicity coordinator for a hospital auxiliary. She has also led fundraising initiatives, including coordinating quilt projects for the ABC Project, organizing antique shows, and managing community sales events.

At Fort Lewis College, she served as Secretary for the Professional Associates (2002-2020) and remains an active member of the Host Family Program Steering Committee.

Personal Interests

Her current pursuits include enjoying time with her grandchildren, engaging in new experiences, traveling, and exploring her passion for quilting and crafts.
