Chad Colby is a professor in the Department of Art & Design at Fort Lewis College. He joined the college in 2002 and currently serves as the Coordinator of Undergraduate Research in the Arts & Humanities. He has successfully completed two sabbatical projects – one during the 2011-2012 academic year in western Mexico and another in spring 2019. Both sabbaticals involved solo exhibitions of new creative research. Prior to Fort Lewis, Mr. Colby was an instructor at various colleges in the Denver metropolitan area, including the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Mr. Colby was the fall 2007 Featured Scholar at Fort Lewis College. He has received other awards and distinctions, including an Artist Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts (2002) and the Best of Colorado exhibition at the Denver International Airport (2006). He is involved in the Council on Undergraduate Research, helping investigate models of support for undergraduate research in the arts and humanities disciplines at Fort Lewis.
Colby's Work Selected for Colorado's Public Art Collection Two paintings by Art and Design Professor Chad Colby were recently selected from a highly competitive field of 568 artists for display in Colorado Mesa University's Escalante Hall. Colby's paintings titled "Testwork" and "Retriever Room," will also become part of the State of Colorado's Public Art Collection.
Artist Residencies Since 2016, Professor Colby has been selected to participate in 4 residency programs, including the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Each of these opportunities has given Colby the opportunity to focus solely on creative projects in an environment that combines artists from different genres including music, literary, and the visual arts.
Painting Best Practices Workshop During the summer of 2016, Professor Colby took part in the "Painting Best Practices" workshop. Colby's goal is to refresh his knowledge of painting supplies and materials, to pursue his ongoing interest in the chemistry and archival properties of oil painting, and to understand how the chemistry of painting and related materials are evolving. Colby notes, this workshop "will support both my studio practice and teaching" and will link "current research and future workshops related to limiting or eliminating solvents from the painting studio.
