About Dr. Yiyan Li

Dr. Yiyan Li received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Henan University of Science & Technology and Chongqing University in Bioelectronics (Biomedical Engineering). In 2016, he received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (Computer Engineering minor) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, supervised by Dr. Jacob Baker. During 2016 - 2017, Dr. Li joined Dr. Weian Zhao's group at UC-Irvine to lead an NIH R01 team on antibiotic resistance detection using an electrical-optical detector combined with the ddPCR technology.

In Fall 2017, Dr. Li joined Fort Lewis College as a Computer Engineering faculty member. Dr. Yiyan Li was the director of the NSF REU site at FLC from 2019 – 2022, the PI of the EPA P3 program from 2020 – 2022, and currently serves as the PI of the NSF STROBE FLC site from 2022 – the present. In the meantime, Dr. Li is the Co-PI of the NSF PREM program and the R&D director of several industry projects at FLC. The REU site supports over 10 undergraduate students each year during the academic year and the summer to perform high-impact research with our faculty. The EPA P3 grant supports 3 students each year to work on developing the machine and the chemistry for a portable PCR device for field water monitoring studies. The NSF STROBE and PREM projects support over 20 undergraduates yearly at FLC.

Dr. Li has performed on behalf of FLC to develop industrial embedded systems for Mission Sports Group LLC, Amberstone Biosciences, the Pagosa Springs Resort, and Sony Hayes Inc. In 2022, Dr. Li designed and patented a polarity switching, single-emitter, single board air purification system with Sony Hayes Inc for future use in motor vehicles.

In addition to the research, development, and supervising activities as a professional scholar and educator, Dr. Li also serves on the editorial board for the journal of SLAS Technology and the review board of the journal of Micromachines and coordinates with the College leadership for the ABET program accreditation.
