About Annie Bergman

Annie Bergman is an assistant professor at Fort Lewis College, joining the Department of Mathematics in the Fall of 2022 after working as a postdoctoral researcher in Vancouver, BC. As a postdoc, she investigated mathematics teachers’ content knowledge, expert learning in mathematics, and the nature of assigning points and feedback in proof-adjacent activities.

Dr. Bergman’s research is in undergraduate mathematics education, focusing on enhancing student engagement in and understanding of advanced mathematics. She is particularly interested in making the usefulness of mathematics more obvious to students and developing opportunities for students to participate in the guided reinvention of key concepts. To do so, she researches the role of mathematics as a prerequisite and how content can be presented that is both useful and interesting to students.

Dr. Bergman’s work is often at the interdisciplinary interface of mathematics and other STEM disciplines; she has published in mathematics and chemistry education and has helped lead a national Discipline Based Educational Researchers (DBER) working group. Dr. Bergman is an active member of the Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) community. She regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals and presents findings at national and international mathematics and mathematics education conferences.

In addition to thinking about math and how people think about math, Dr. Bergman is an avid adventurer and outdoorswoman who likes to quilt, play video games, and practice yoga.
