About Dr. Casey

Dr. Casey’s research is focused on improving low-cost air quality measurement techniques.  Metal oxide, electrochemical, and non-dispersive infrared sensors have emerged recently with great potential to help inform air quality in ways traditional instrumentation is not well suited, though the usefulness of these tools is complicated by cross sensitivity to environmental variables like temperature and humidity, as well as potentially confounding gas species.  Dr. Casey develops and applies quantification methods to characterize air quality in both indoor and ambient environments.  She worked with a student to investigate air quality impacts of reduced emissions from the transportation sector and other sources during the pandemic ‘stay at home’ order in Spring of 2020.  She also supported a student-led effort to measure CO2 in indoor spaces areas across the FLC campus to assess the adequacy of ventilation and is engaged in an ongoing student-led project to compare air quality in indoor and outdoor environments on the FLC campus.  Before joining the department of Physics and Engineering at Fort Lewis College in 2019, Dr. Casey implemented the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Program for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
